How do I analyze my kid's chess games if I don't play chess?

The short answer: you can get surprisingly far without playing. Free engines will show you where the game turned — those moments are visible as cliffs in a graph, no chess knowledge required. Your job is the questions a non-player can genuinely ask: what happened here, how much time did you use on that move, has this come up before. What you can't do without chess knowledge is name why a move was bad, or spot the same weakness recurring across ten games. That's the part that needs a coach or software built for it.

The free 10-minute routine

Start by getting the game digital. Now look at the graph. You're looking for the cliffs — the places where the line drops suddenly. Those are the moves that decided the game. Most games have two or three of them. Write down the move numbers. That's the whole routine. You now know where to point.

The questions a non-playing parent can ask well

Knowing the move numbers is enough to have a useful conversation. A few questions that work regardless of chess skill:

Timing matters as much as the questions. After a loss, wait a day. Ask with curiosity, not as prosecution — the goal is to get the kid talking about their thinking, not defending their choices.

What you genuinely can't do from the graph

The engine tells you a move was bad. It doesn't tell you why — and the why is the whole diagnosis. A dropped pawn on move 22 could mean the kid calculated wrong, moved too fast, had no plan and picked something, or was rattled from a near-miss two moves earlier. Those have different fixes. The graph can't tell them apart.

There's a harder problem too: the engine has no memory. It evaluates one game at a time. If the same habit — moving too fast on the opponent's best reply, or drifting after the opening book ends — has cost your kid points in three separate tournaments, the single-game graph won't show it. Pattern-across-games is the diagnosis that actually changes how someone practices, and it's the hardest thing to see one game at a time.
